About Derrick

  Derrick W. Roach

Candidate for California Assembly – District 79

Derrick Roach is a native of San Diego, California.  He has been married to his first and only wife for thirteen (13) years.  He is the father of four (4) children ages 11, 10, 8 and 3.  He is an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently serves in a leadership position.  Derrick is also currently involved with the South Bay Little League and volunteers as a coach.

Derrick comes from a family of immigrants, servicemen and business owners. One of Derrick’s grandparents came from Puerto Rico and married a United States Marine that served in WWII and Korea.  One of the other grandparents fled communist Russia as a child and lived in China for twenty five years and barely escaped China before it was occupied by the Japanese military at the start of WWII.  She came to San Diego and also married a United States Marine who served in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam.  These families built their homes and raised their families in San Diego, instilling the values of patriotism, loyalty, hard work, responsibility and integrity.  Derrick is proud of his family’s history and contributions which are dynamic and diverse ranging from the liberation of Guam during WWII to public service in elected office to the founding of The Walt Disney Company.

By profession Derrick is a licensed private investigator in the State of California and has been instrumental in assisting all levels of law enforcement in bringing individuals to justice.  Derrick has seen how dishonesty can ruin lives, businesses and in some cases, whole industries.  His efforts have resulted in some of the largest prosecutions of their type in California history.   Especially noteworthy are the cases that have been prosecuted for insurance premium fraud; some of which have had the largest settlements and restitution payments in the history of California’s State Compensation Insurance Fund.   This has resulted in millions of dollars being returned to the State of California which means that it was ultimately returned to you – the taxpayer.  If elected to the State Assembly Derrick will continue to fight fraud and corruption at all levels and to look out for you – the voter.

Derrick first became involved in the community at a young age and served from 1983 to 1984 as a 4-H All Star for the University of California Cooperative Extension to represent San Diego County at the state level.  He was a founding member of the Bonsall Chamber of Commerce.  He served as Vice President of the Bonsall Chamber of Commerce from 1990 to 1992.  From 1992 to 1996 he lived out of state while attending a university to further his education and for a job opportunity.  When a career opening offered him a chance to come back to San Diego, he eagerly returned to his roots.  From 1996 to 1999 he served as an Assistant District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America.  From 2002 to 2006 Derrick served as President of the school board for Dehesa Charter School, which serves students throughout San Diego County, south Riverside and south Orange Counties.  During 2002 Derrick volunteered as a seminary teacher and was responsible for the local supervision of student instruction with the Church Educational System for the LDS Church.

Derrick has been a strong supporter of small business and entrepreneurs throughout his career.   He understands the unique challenges that private business owners face and works to protect the rights and interests of the people who make the economy flow.   Over the last ten years, Derrick has recovered millions of dollars in unclaimed property from the California State Controller for clients in various industries including hospitals, health clinics and healthcare providers.  He understands the challenges of working with various government agencies and has successfully navigated the ever changing laws, regulations, and policies on behalf of his clients.

Derrick is a strong advocate for greater choices in the educational field.  His children have attended public schools, private schools, charter schools and have been home schooled.  He understands that different people have different educational needs.  He has worked for more parent involvement and fiscal accountability in schools to improve students’ education.  He has worked with lobbying groups based in Sacramento in the educational field over the last six years to increase the standard of education in California as well as in San Diego County.   While he served as President of the charter school governing board, the school tripled in enrollment.   Derrick supports more choices and autonomy at the local level where education takes place.   When superintendents, directors, teachers, parents and students can make more of their own choices within a framework of accountability, learning becomes more relevant to the student and greater results follow.  Derrick is also extremely concerned about high school graduation rates and the percentages of students seeking post secondary education.

Derrick is committed to:

  • Protect your paychecks and vote against tax increases that would strangle the middle class.
  • Work to better our children’s future by restoring common sense in education funding.
  • Invite business and industries to the area to bring good paying jobs and stability to the tax base.

Derrick is grateful for the men and women of the military that stand to fight for our country and our freedoms.  He also believes that it is essential to have elected officials that are willing to stand and defend those who protect our country.

Derrick is committed to:

  • Defend and support military personnel and their families.    They need strong support.   They deserve it.

Derrick is the

Pro Family,

Pro Education,

Pro Business,

Pro Military

candidate that will use common sense to reestablish the strength of California so we can once again enjoy a growing economy and the quality of life that is deserving of America’s Finest City.

The people of the 79th District are great people.   I have been to your homes, your churches, your schools, your businesses, your ball games, your picnics and your beach parties.   I drive down the South Bay freeways every day just like you do.   It is time that you are represented and served by someone who knows your needs and wants to work with you.    I am committed to a better future for our district – for all of us.

I would be honored if you would trust me with your vote.  I pledge that, if elected, I will do my best to represent all the people of the 79th District, not just one group.
